Description

Today, our world is in turmoil. It is beset by the quest for dominance, unilateral thinking, coercion and war. Much of our global challenges arise due to the absence of consensus-building mechanisms. The choices in international affairs are stark. On one hand we see democracies that manifest accentuated polarisation and on the other hand we see authoritarian regimes that enforce a coercive unity.

The lack of consensus isn’t confined to member nations but permeates our social fabric, the organisations we work for, civil society and also our personal lives. Social media is replete with trolls where many account holders try and undermine the views of others by pouring defilements. Our lives are filled with destructive dissent across realms such as law, health and education.

What we need are spaces and tools that facilitate and support constructive debates but also provide pathways for convergence and consensus. What does it take to have generative conversations where people are free to disagree; where disagreement is constructive and yet actors are mindful of the value of gravitating to the level of compromise? Is a middle path possible?

You are invited to join a screening of the movie 12 Angry Men followed by a workshop on Consensus Building. Released in 1957 and starring Henry Fonda and Lee J Cobb, this Hollywood movie is a defining example of how lack of consensus can be overcome to achieve unanimity.

The workshop will be facilitated by Sudarshan Rodriguez, Founder and CEO, RTL Works and Shakti Saran, Founder Shaktify. The screening will be followed by breakout room discussions and sharing in the plenary. Participants will be able to debate and discuss learnings from this movie and their merits and demerits with the aim of understanding what it takes to achieve consensus of views in our daily professional and personal lives.
