Nature Based Solutions, Regaining Planetary Health the Natural Way

Why Nature Based Solutions
Our home, planet Earth, has created conditions of interdependence between air, soil, water and the many creatures which were functioning perfectly well until recently. We humans pride ourselves in our clever accomplishments — energy, communications, the Thermos — and yet we are witnessing unabated planetary destruction. We haven’t been able to use the simplest of technical solutions to cure the many ills we’ve created for ourselves. There still is hope that our planetary destruction can be reversed, mitigated and regenerated but only if we choose to bring Nature Based Solutions (NBS) to the forefront. Earth, now in her 5-billionth year, has made air, water, soil, fungi, insects, plants and animals work in concert with each other so well, that we can observe and mimic this in our own relationships with our planet.
What we will cover
We will evaluate technology-based solutions with nature-based ones. Are we trying to impose our clever technologies on systems which were working fine without us? As opposed to the massive amounts of Technology-based Solutions upon which we both rely and think of first, Nature-based Solutions are the examples of planetary health derived from millions of years of experience. Whether regeneration of soil or restoration of habitat, the ‘answers’ are available to us if we just learn to watch and listen to the biosphere of which we are an integrated part.
The aim of this workshop is to re-create and explore the applications of Nature-based Solutions in everything we do. For example, consider living shorelines to secure our shores instead of bulkheads and jetties and trees to shade our buildings and our streets to provide instant cooling instead of millions of air conditioners. There are hundreds of these at our bidding, should we decide to observe and use them.
Key benefits
Join Eco literacy guide, Mark Haubner to gain awareness and draw insights into hundreds of Nature-based Solutions which are available as tools for us to use and decide which of them would fit best to their own priorities in their bioregion. Pulling out one (or more in combination) of the NBS for one’s local project or program will become a priority decision that will bring one’s problem statement and desired outcomes into focus. Sharing these solutions with others becomes the basis for a team project or program which can be then moved to other places in any bioregion.
Eligibility and Pre-requisites
Registration is open to all who are interested in making a difference to our planet and living in harmony with Mother Nature. No prior experience is necessary
