Food Systems for Individual & Planetary Health

Description

With the advent of the Green revolution in the late ‘60s, the face of global agriculture underwent a colossal change. Hands in glove with industrial revolutions, the world of farming has witnessed the proliferation of mechanistic approaches over the last fifty years. Consequently, we have claims of phenomenal increase in farm productivity on one hand and on the other we hear stories of trails of toxicity that have been let loose and environmental degradation that has taken place.

Such conflicting claims are not restricted to just agriculture but encompass our larger food systems that include animal husbandry and fishing. In this webinar, Shakti Saran, Founder, Shaktify will be in conversation with Morag Gamble, Founder, Permaculture Education Institute and Peter Lehner, Managing Attorney, Earthjustice to make sense of developments in the ways we produce, distribute and consume food which are otherwise left obscure and comparatively hidden from view.

The objectives of this webinar are two-fold. First, it aims to sensitise a typical urban audience and heighten consciousness of contemporary issues in food systems. Second, it seeks answers to how shifts should be introduced in addition to what shifts need to be introduced so as to make them amenable to adoption. For instance, while working at a policy level, how we do gravitate towards convergence and the weakening of polarisation? When working bottom-up, what measures do we introduce that could lend themselves to widespread amplification?

In summary, we will view the consequences of our current approach to managing food systems through the lens of individual and planetary health.
